Vanessa denha-garmo editor in chief co-publisher Sky diving and rock climbing have never been on my bucket list but I quite enjoy hearing and reading about the stories of the adventurous types and Rob McKany is one of them. Rob has invested thousands of hours into his passion and now he is making an investment in the life of another as he raises money during his next climb for a little girl in need. I sat down with the California native this past summer and perused hundreds of photos of his many risktaking escapades while he talked about near-death experiences. As a writer who likes to capture the stories of the adventurer, Joyce Wiswell penned his story for this month’s cover. As I listened to Rob narrate his many quests, I thought about life and the importance to live it to its fullest. One issue that has surfaced numerous times over the years in our community has been the topic of money. It is a subject I have wanted to address on these pages for a while. In a three-part piece, we present information and opinions about money, its use, abuse and obsession. Money is investment in our present and future. How much do we need to live life to its fullest? Is money that necessary component for life’s accomplishments? We could have dedicated this entire issue to the topic and perhaps we will revisit writing additional stories from a different angle but for right now, we give you a piece about bankruptcy, another one about money management and my opinion about our personal perspectives on money. My husband and I always talk about making investments. One of the many things I admire about Chaldeans is their business sense and their entrepreneurial spirit. They may not be lined up to jump out of an airplane but they are natural risk takers and every investment at some level is a risk. The Sarafas did their research before they invested in a Michigan landmark — Frankenmuth Brewery. While my husband quenched his thirst on a hot summer night with a bottle of the brew, I invested an evening to tour the restaurant and brewery. In life, we invest money, time and ourselves into what we deem valuable. Nothing is more precious than our children. Preparing for the school year is an investment in them. For so many families, September is the start of a nine-month commitment to a set bedtime, homework and after-school activities. We give parents some tips from experts who know first-hand what your child needs to succeed. Mary Ann Ayar is not only a fellow mom, she is a teacher with years of experience in knowing what a child needs to flourish and grow. I had the pleasure of chatting with her for this article and she not only provided important information for our readers, she gave me — as a mom — some valuable ideas that I plan on incorporating in my own life as my daughter heads into a full-time school year schedule. Investing in our children today will make the difference in how they BUSY. Talk to ‘Cause you BUSY. BUSY. us never about know BUSY. a what 401(k) 401(k) you BUSY. might run into. live life tomorrow. One school district has made an investment in a new Chaldean principal who makes her own commitment to our children. While Rob invests money and time into his passion, Samira Binna has invested her time and talent to a yearly commitment — designing and sewing the dress for the Our Lady of Consolation Statue for the annual Blessed Mother celebrations in Carey, Ohio. Crystal Jabiro writes the story of the pilgrimage that attracts thousands of people and the dressmaker who journeys with them through her own artistic contribution. Every day, we make an investment of our money, time and of ourselves with the work we do and the lives we touch. As much as I love my work and enjoy being able to make a good living, there is no greater commitment than to my faith. At the end of the day which is really the end of my life, it is about my relationship with God and what I have done for my fellow man. My investment in life is really an investment in many lives and prioritizing those investments: God, my health, my family, my businesses, my friends and to charity. I invest so much of me in everything that I do that I sometimes wonder, what will be left when it is all over. What have you invested in today? Dawn Shaouni, Agent Alaha Imid Koullen89 W.
