from the archives The First Chaldean Festival In the early 1970s, the Chaldean Church donated four acres in Southfield to the then-fledgling Chaldean Iraqi Association of Michigan. In 1973, club members realized they owed ,000 to ,000 in back taxes on the site. So they decided to raise money at the Arab World Festival in Detroit. Some community members donned traditional clothing and showed off their dance steps, while others rented a giant grill and sold lamb shish kabobs, pita bread and baklava. “We participated for three or four years and were able to raise enough money to pay the taxes,” recalled Dave Nona, who along with Ramzi Kasgorgis and others helped organize the festivities. “Everyone had put their hopes into building a club on that property, and without the festival we would have lost it.” Those hopes were realized in 1981, when the Southfield Manor opened. Today, of course, that facility has been replaced by Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield.
