chaldean on the STREET

chaldean on the STREET What’s your favorite Chaldean or Jewish dish? By Anthony Samona The Arts and Culture Committee of the Building Community Initiative between the Chaldean News and the Jewish News held a Festive Food Tasting event on August 3 at Vineyards Deli in Farmington Hills. What better place than to ask people about their favorite food? I absolutely love the Arook prepared by my mother for this event, which is fried patties made out of veggies or meat, mixed with spices. I also love Pakota, which is cooked barley with lamb or beef. As for the Jewish cuisine, I enjoyed tasting the honey mustard salami, which is smeared with apricot preserves. – Nahla Abbo West Bloomfield Being part of the committee for five years, it feels great to participate in an event where people all over the community, whatever religion they may be, can join in. My favorite dish would be the vegetarian Arook, which I proudly prepared for the event. I really enjoyed food from the Jewish cuisine like the Kugel and Farmers Salad, which had cottage cheese and sour cream filled with vegetables. – Feryal Yono Orchard Lake Dolma is by far my absolute favorite Chaldean dish. It has to be very sour and juicy, and it cannot be dry. – Rita Gatia Sterling Heights My favorite dish would have to be Tepsi — eggplant, meat and onions which is served with or without rice. I especially love the way my mother-in-law makes it! – Angela Kello Sterling Heights Shakh-mahshi, which is stuffed baby eggplant with a mixture of sautéed meat, onions and spices, is one of my favorite Chaldean dishes. I love it when it has a little bit of sourness to it, some stew, but not too dry. – Hilda Markoz Rochester Hills For me, I would have to say Dolma! I love when the Dolma is spicy and sour. My favorite parts of the Dolma are the onions, tomatoes and zucchini. – Kim Lewis Rochester I really enjoyed the Arook. It has a great taste, and is perfect for a snack that can be eaten by itself or made into a sandwich. – Joe Shallal Franklin Village Everything at this event tastes great! I would have to say my favorite is the Arook. You can make it with meat or without meat. It tastes great either way! – Chris Hajjar Troy My favorite Chaldean dish would have to be Dolma. It is always so good, and I can never get sick of it! – Jessica Yaldo Sterling Heights I love Biryani! To me, it really is the best Chaldean entrée. Biryani makes such a great dinner. – Amanda Kinaia Sterling Heights 34 CHALDEAN NEWS SEPTEMBER 2011
