The church dedicates November to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, those faithful Christians who have died and gone before us but who still must atone for their sins. O most sweet Jesus, through the bloody sweat which Thou didst suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel scourging, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most painful crowning with thorns, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in carrying Thy cross to Calvary, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel Crucifixion, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most bitter agony on the Cross, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. O most sweet Jesus, through the immense pain which Thou didst suffer in breathing forth Thy Blessed Soul, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord. (Recommend yourself to the Souls in Purgatory and mention your intentions here) Blessed Souls, I have prayed for thee; I entreat thee, who are so dear to God, and who are secure of never losing Him, to pray for me a miserable sinner, who is in danger of being damned, and of losing God forever. Amen. 16 CHALDEAN NEWS NOVEMBER 2013

obituaries Habiba Delly–Butti At the heart of every great family is a grandmother whose words speak a language of love, whose actions build a lasting foundation, whose lessons inspire for a lifetime. Habiba Delly–Butti was born on January 16, 1919 and passed away on October 16, 2013. Habiba Delly-Butti is the wife of the late Hurmiz Butti. She is survived by her two sons Yousif and Peter Butti, her daughter Victoria Oudah, and her seven grandchildren. She is the motherin-law of Margaret Butti and Suham Betty. Rest in peace Youma Habiba. We will always love you and miss you dearly. John Henry Tobia Hakim Less than five years shy of 100 years old, John Henry Tobia Hakim was called to his heavenly home on September 14, 2013. His will to live was strong, but his body was tired. John was born on April 15, 1918. He was the son of Thomas (Tobia) and Barbara Hakim, and brother to Karim, Rosemary and Julia. He was a brother-in-law to Jamil, Norma and Jim. He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps. In 1946, he married the love of his life, Rosie. They had three children, Tommy, Sherry and Debbie. John was a grandfather to Melissa, Adam and Armand, and a great grandfather to Zylee. He was also a proud uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews and godfather to his nephew Carl. John and his brother Karim owned Hakim’s Food and later with Jamil they added the pharmacy, which was a family-run business for many years. Other than the love for his family was his love for golf. He was part of a foursome that included the late Hani Sarafa, who probably had John’s golf Recently deceased Community members Hikmat Elias Kajy Feb. 2, 1935 - Oct. 20, 2013 Mary Shamami Mazgi Dec. 24, 1920 - Sept. 24, 2013 Jamal Faraj Oraha Oct. 13, 1949 - Oct. 20, 2013 Katrina Yousif Madalo July 1, 1936 - Sept. 22, 2013 Tom Safaro July 1, 1955 - Oct. 17, 2013 Ramsey Yousif Jiddou Jan. 3, 1944 - Sept. 21, 2013 clubs ready as he entered the gates of Heaven. To Paul Vincent and Eddie Elia, a special thank you from his family for being such a big part of his life. His longest and dearest friend was Sharkey George, who he loved very much. At age 69 John started to work for Central Alarm. Being that he was born on Income Tax day, it should be of no surprise that his job title was “Collector.” He would call late payers and ask them if their payment “was coming by camel express.” He was extremely dedicated to his job and my most dependable and honest employee. After 25 years, in February 2012 he decided it was time to retire at age 94. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. John was a man who cherished his family, had inexhaustible energy, a strong work ethic, a great sense of humor, and determination — or some might call it stubbornness. He loved to joke around and was so witty that it was impossible to make a comeback. He appeared to be a man with an iron fist but he was really gentle and loving. He has left us all with wonderful memories, and he will never be forgotten. – Robert Hakim Faiza Jaboro Faiza Jaboro, born on August 31, 1939, passed on July 11, 2013. She was one of strongest, kindest and most generous people I’ve known and I’m proud to call her my grandma. She lived such an amazing life and the hundreds of people she touched will forever keep her memory in their hearts. Born and raised in Baghdad, she married Salim Jaboro on October 17, 1960 and was happily married for more than 50 years. They raised four — kids Mazin, Mahar, Nazik and Nancy — and moved to Michigan in 1973 in hopes of a better life. All the memories I have of her are scattered in my mind in a huge collage, filled with her warmest hugs, the way she laughed and when I would sleep Walid Tobia Kannu Feb. 20, 1972 - Oct. 13, 2013 Alice Elia Mansour Aug. 20, 1983 - Sept. 20, 2013 Salim Hermiz Dado July 1, 1927 - Oct. 12, 2013 Hikmat Josy Soka Dec. 17, 1940 - Oct. 5, 2013 Floreen Esho Ayoub March 3, 1960 - Oct. 5, 2013 Wahida Soro Sadik Dec. 1, 1929 - Oct. 5, 2013 over her house when I was a child. She was constantly surrounded by her friends and family and was such a social butterfly. There was never a moment where she wasn’t smiling. She was such a positive force, leaving a smile on everyone near her. Faiza adored her 12 grandchildren and was incredibly generous. She was the heart of all family events and hands down the best cook. I could always look forward to coming over her house to watch her make dolma, kelacha and other deliciously satisfying favorites. Years of cherished memories passed and I remember vividly the last time I was with her. I came straight from my high school graduation ceremony to her rehab center and at that time, she was not doing well at all. But when she saw me in my cap and gown her face lit up with joy. To see her fourth grandchild finally graduate high school and become an adult must have been so rewarding for her to witness, and I knew how proud she was of me. My grandma spent her last moments of life constantly surrounded by her friends and family before she was peacefully placed up in heaven. Months filled with tears and the attempt to cope had left my family not with holes in our hearts, but the warmth filled by my grandma’s spirit. Faiza may have passed but the memory of the wife, mother, grandmother and friend will continue to live on in the hearts of all her loved ones, and her smiling face is forever branded in my memory. – Dominic Anton Zarifa (Zaro) Jarjosa Pattah Zarifa (Zaro) Jarjosa Pattah was born on Feb 8, 1928 and passed away on Oct 9, 2013. She lived 85 beautiful years. Kind, humble, peaceful and respectful are just a few words to describe the woman who immigrated to the U.S in April of 1992 with her husband Razzoki after their son was released from being a prisoner of war. She loved telling stories from back home, some that even dated more than 50 years. Her face would light up when she told these stories as if she was reliving them. She was the happiest when her family members surrounded her and this is how her last few weeks were spent. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and siblings who were praying with her and comforting her. Zarifa is survived by her husband of 72 years, Razzoki Pattah. She is also survived by her 10 children: Amal (beloved Nouri) Pattah, Zuhair (beloved Karima), Majda (Shamoon) Pattah, Samir (Ibtissam), Asma (Yousif) Thomas, Usama (Mahasin), Zihoura (Gamal) Hermiz, Adnan (Suhad), Haytham (Darleen), and Johnny (Eva). She is also survived by 43 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and 8 siblings. Rest in peace our beautiful, beloved Yuma. You were an angel on earth and now an angel in Heaven watching down on us all. We love you and we will miss you. Until we meet again. NOVEMBER 2013 CHALDEAN NEWS 17
