Some 300 people gathered at Penna’s of Sterling Heights for the third annual event. Attendees enjoyed dinner, dancing, a giant cake and a raffle for a decorative statue depicting children with Jesus Christ. The evening was meant to help pay off the million in loans owed for the Shelby Township church’s construction, but Fr. Emanuel Shaleta said ticket sales fell short of the hoped-for 700 to 800. “The economy, the economy, the economy,” he said, bemoaning weaker attendance than anticipated. “And there are so many weddings and communions. People look at a fundraiser just like any other party and they shouldn’t do that. This is a priority but it looks like people’s priorities are different than they should be.” Nevertheless, Fr. Shaleta said he is not worried about the church’s debt. “I don’t think about it – I just think about daily life,” he said. “I trust in the Lord every day.” 1.
