Steve Acho Live in Concert was a fundraiser for the Chaldean Federation of America’s (CFA) refugee program and attracted just a touch more than 100 people. “It is unfortunate more people did not come out to support the event,” said LeeAnn Kirma, Chaldean American Ladies of Charity board member. “Not only was it for a great cause — helping the refugees — but the show was entertaining.” Wanting to find a way to contribute to the CFA cause with his own style, Acho decided to what he does best — sing and play the keyboards. “I put on this fundraiser because I recognized that even in difficult economic times people still spend money on entertainment, and that there are people within our community that are much less fortunate than ourselves who could benefit from me putting on a show, which I love to do anyway,” said Acho. “I thought this would be a way to have a great time and help those in need at the same time. I had a great time and I hope others did too. I appreciate the support of Chaldeans and non-Chaldeans alike, not just when it comes to my music, but when it comes to charitable causes.” Community members donated each to see Acho perform his original music including his parodies that are community favorites: Chaldean Girl, Fahkri and Sweet Home West Bloom-field. Opening for Acho was Rafat Ita, who sang both American and Middle Eastern music. The night was capped off with desert and Frank Sinatra music sung by Jim Akouri. Vinnie Jonna served as the evening’s emcee offering up humor of his own. He auctioned off two Pistons tickets worth 0; the highest bidder paid 0. Jonna also introduced Mike George during the evening and as the president of the CFA, George expressed his gratitude to all those who attended the event. “This refugee initiative is very important,” said George to the audience. “Your support is greatly appreciated.” 38 CHALDEAN NEWS MAY 2008

I am going to recommend a repeat performance in the fall for the CFA Refugees benefit and attempt to attract 500 persons or more at Shenandoah Country Club.” Acho also expressed his gratitude for the many people who helped put on the event. “We were able to raise several thousand dollars for the refugee initiative,” said Acho. “Thanks to Wireless Giant and Jim Akouri for making the event possible; to Steve Yatooma and Nadine from Neptix; to Rafat Ita and Jim Akouri for lending their talents; to Mike George, Rula and the Chaldean Federation; to Martin Manna and the Chaldean Chamber of Commerce; to the Chaldean Ladies of Charity; to the Chaldean News; to Marcella and St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church; to Theresa Abbo and Shenandoah for being great hosts; and to Joe Sesi for his help.” www.mariosdetroit.com Italian Grill $ 22 95 per Adult $ 10 95 per Child (5-12 yrs.)
