Christians Demonstrate in Belgium for Nineveh Plain Some 5,000 demonstrators demanded the establishment of an administrative area for Christians on the Nineveh Plains in northern Iraq on April 19 outside the European Parliament in Brussels. Demonstrators came by buses from several European countries. The event was organized by a coalition of Assyrian groups. The official statement released by the organizing committee urges the European Union, United Nations and the U.S. to provide necessary protection for the Christians of Iraq and to “help in establishing an autonomous zone for them and provide them with the security they urgently need.” The demonstrators rejected the idea by German politicians to bring large numbers of Christian refugees to Europe, saying that Europe should instead help them remain on their ancestral lands where they have lived for thousands of years. According to the organizers more demonstrations are planned to take place in Europe, focusing on the issue of a self-administered area for the Assyrians of Iraq. — Assyrian International News Agency (www.aina.org.) Pre-Saddam Iraq Subject of New Book Life in pre-Saddam Iraq is detailed in “Once Upon a Time in Iraq,” a new book by Basil Balian. Balian, an ex-Iraqi and resident of Cincinnati, memorializes his growing-up years in Iraq. From his early childhood spent among the Kurds in Khanaqin as the son of a British Petroleum Company executive, to his adolescent and young adult years in Baghdad and as a student at the American Jesuit high school, Baghdad College, Balian shares personal stories of an Iraq long gone. “Iraq was going through relatively normal times during the decades that I write about,” said Balian, who mentions Chaldeans in the book. “Iraq was pro-West at this time. There was an underlying strong nationalistic sentiment among the middle class and educated masses to be independent but the main outside influence was a western influence. Indications are that history is about to repeat itself. Maybe there are lessons to be learned this time.” The 250-page book is available from www.Lulu.com.
