events WDET town hall

events WDET town hall Taking the pulse of the community Photos by James Wallace A candid conversation about Chaldeans took place at Shenandoah Country Club in ballroom 3 overlooking the golf course last month as the Chaldean News hosted a town hall meeting with WDET 101.9 FM radio. Craig Fahle hosted the two-hour event with Chaldean News Co-Publisher and Editor in Chief Vanessa Denha Garmo. More than 70 people from varied backgrounds in the community chimed in on a variety of topics pertaining to the community including perceptions and misconceptions, political involvement, business and charitable giving. The event was sponsored by the Bank of Michigan. The day following the event, WDET hosted a panel discussion about the town hall live on the Craig Fahle show. Jane Shallal, executive director of the Chaldean American Ladies of Charity; Burt Kassab, board member of Bank of Michigan; Al Zara, founder of Geektown USA and candidate for West Bloomfield board of trustees; and Denha Garmo recapped the conversation from the night prior. “I thought it was very informative and a good start,” said Zara. “It is important that the media understand our community and this was a great platform.” The event was part of WDET’s series of town hall meetings where they travel Metro Detroit meeting various ethnic groups and communities in effort to build relationships and better understand the issues of each group “We’ve done a number of similar meetings around Metro Detroit, but this one stood out,” said Fahle. “The level of participation was great, and I got a real sense that what we are trying to do with this was understood and appreciated. It was genuine.” 9 10 1 2 3 4 6 7 5 1. Chris Zebari 2. Hani Hakim 3. Marvin Mansour 4. Rula Yono 5. Cindy Denha, Gloria Kassa, Lillian Shallal, Connie and Jay Yasso 6. Craig Fahle 7.
