KIDS corner Avoid the summer daze! By Laura Abouzeid As the school year comes to the end, many of you may be eager to alter your days from studying and schoolwork to swimming and sleeping in. But did you know that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often fall behind? Studies show that students who read regularly during the summer remember what they learned from the previous year, and are more likely to progress and do better on tests — while those who didn’t have lower scores. That means you could actually forget what you already know and have to learn it all over again! And one summer off could turn into a whole school year of struggling. However, unless you’re reading a book from the Goosebumps series, don’t be afraid! All it takes is reading as few as five to six books to prevent this spooky situation! “I have seen students who come back to school in the fall and have to spend the first couple of months playing catch-up,” said Riva Hannish, a teacher at West Utica Elementary in Shelby Township. Hannish suggests using Readers Theater, which can be found online or in bookstores. The program lets you role play and become a character. You can even kick it up a notch and wear costumes and use funny voices while reading! Whether it’s a book, play or even a comic book, reading is an easy and fun way to hold on to your skills. “Cause if you don’t use it, you lose it!” Here’s a list of books to help get you started.
