FOUNDATION UPDATE CCF Holds Community Forum on COVID-19 Impact Elham Nooradeen pictured holding her class certificate with CCF Citizenship teacher, Salam Sesi. The Path to Citizenship Elham Nooradeen is a very bright and friendly individual. Upon meeting her, Salam Sesi noticed that Elham was the type of student who gave it her all in any given situation. So naturally, she excelled in the CCF’s Citizenship Preparation course. “She was so determined and such a pleasure to work with as a student,” Sesi remarked. In fact, Elham was so honored by the support and the opportunity provided by the CCF, she wrote a speech to read for the class to hear. Elham is now preparing to take her USCIS Citizenship Exam in the coming months, and through her preparation at the CCF, she feels ready to take on whatever challenges come her way. The Chaldean Community Foundation, in partnership with Michigan Center for Contextual Factors in Alzheimer’s Disease (MCCFAD) held a small group discussion January 19 on the impact of COVID-19, in regard to medical care, social engagement, and family life. Dr. Linda Sayed, Research Scientist for MCCFAD, discussed the personal impacts that COVID-19 had on participants and their immediate families to gain a greater understanding of how the pandemic has had a distinct impact on the Chaldean community. The CCF and the CACC distributed pizzas to Henry Ford West Bloomfield on January 5. Participants gathered for a group photo for the MCCFAD panel on January 19. Protecting our First Responders The CCF has distributed personal protective equipment to multiple organizations in the metro Detroit area. Many of these organizations were first responders in the community, like law enforcement and medical staff, who are on the front lines battling the COVID pandemic. The supplies were greatly appreciated by these community members as they continue to combat the virus and maintain a safe environment for the community and their employees. Organizations including Henry Ford Macomb, Beaumont, the Sterling Heights Police Department, APIA Vote, and many local schools and churches received donations of hand sanitizers, facemasks, disinfectant wipes, and more. The donations will also be reaching a far-reaching number of communities including the Khmer, Filipino, Chaldean, and other distinct communities within southeast Michigan. Supporting Our Healthcare Workers During the month of January, the Chaldean Community Foundation and the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce provided meals for our medical community as a token of appreciation for their work in combatting the COVID surge within their hospitals. Nearly 400 pizzas were provided to Henry Ford Macomb and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital staff to feed various shifts of healthcare workers within their hospitals. The workers were certainly appreciative of the gesture. “Not even surgical masks can hide the delight on their faces prompted by the generosity! It is an honor to have your organization as our partner in caring for the community,” said Gregory Jakub, Manager of Community Relations, PR and Marketing for Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. Beaumont PPE 1-CN and MISD CN: Community organizations like Beaumont and Macomb Intermediate School District received PPE to use for the upcoming year. 8 CHALDEAN NEWS FEBRUARY 2022
