a journey through time Fr. Boji educates on Christianity in Iraq By Vanessa Denha Garmo Last month Fr. Manuel Boji took a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, to educate fellow Catholics from around the country about Christianity in Iraq. Speaking about faith in his homeland, Fr. Boji was the keynote speaker on the first day of a two-day national conference of the Resource Religious Center Institute (RCIA). Nearly 600 people attentively listened as Fr. Boji, pastor of Holy Martyrs in Sterling Heights, journeyed through time giving an historical account of Christianity in Iraq and expanding throughout the centuries to the U.S. invasion and the modern day. Fr. Boji explained the history of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Iraq, especially the Church as an ancient Christian Church, its missionary activities, the persecution it has suffered and the migration of its members throughout the world. “The reaction from the audience was very positive,” said Fr. Boji. “Many people knew very little about Christianity in Iraq. I was able to also play a DVD from Fr. Niaz Toma on Babylonians and another DVD from the Assyrian Institute which gave even more information.” The annual conference primarily focused on legal and financial issues of operating a church and several vendors were on hand to address those issues. A highlight of the conference was Fr. Boji’s 90-minute presentation. He stressed the importance of preserving the distinct Christian identity outside of Iraq and right here in America. Today Christians in Iraq face persecution and prejudice. There have been bombings of churches and murders of Christians. Many Fr. Manuel Boji takes to the podium in St. Louis. Christians are leaving the country because of the situation. Fr. Boji addressed the present situation of Christians and the future of the Chaldean Catholic Church in Iraq in order to give a fuller understanding of the present situation. “Christianity has its own flavor, richness, spirituality,” said Fr. Boji. “We as Iraqi Christians have endured tough times and persecution, but everyone must know we always have hope.” Basil Yaldo Sales Vivian Namou Finance Manager VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR MONTHLY SALES, SERVICE, AND PARTS SPECIALS WWW.SOUTHFIELDCHRYSLER.COM ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PRICES AND LARGEST INVENTORY SOUTHFIELD 28100 Telegraph Road (800) 725-0697 HOURS Sun Closed Mon 9:00-9:00 Tue 9:00-7:00 Wed 9:00-7:00 Thu 9:00-9:00 Fri 9:00-6:00 Sat 10:00-3:00 54 CHALDEAN NEWS DECEMBER 2011
