chaldean on the STREET Where to go to college? BY HALIM SHEENA While it may seem as though Summer has just begun, we have dedicated this month’s issue to back to school, specifically focusing on universities and colleges. We asked students how they made the decision to go to the college or university they currently attend. The decision to choose Oakland University wasn’t really a choice- it was a given. From the administration to the school itself, I knew it was going to push me to my full potential. Being able to be at ease while still being driven and encouraged to do better is a big factor that I would highly recommend to anyone. – Sandy Korkis, 22, Sterling Heights I chose Wayne State for undergraduate and medical school due to the wealth of diversity and opportunities and due to its location in Detroit. One days you could be helping the homeless in a free clinic and the next at a Tigers’ game with your class mates. There’s no better school for education and a modern city experience. – Matthew Hanna, 25, West Bloomfield I chose OU because it’s close to home, safe & offers a great HR program I am planning on going into. Choosing OU was an easy decision because of the great opportunities I’ve seen from alumni who have graduated before me. – Melanie Mansour, 19, Sterling Heights Obtaining my Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The ironic thing is that I chose to go to the University of Michigan-Dearborn on whim. The sole reason I chose UM-Dearborn is because they have small class sizes, and I wanted my professor to know me, my goals, and what I wanted to gain from their classes. My experience at UM-Dearborn was filled with amazing professors that cared about me, a CASA chapter that became family, and amazing experiences I will treasure forever. – Narmeen Shammami, 22, West Bloomfield I chose Macomb Community College because it offers a lot of opportunities to expand my knowledge. I wanted to start at a community college because I feel like it’s a great start and it offered basically the same courses you would take at a university. I also talked to successful doctors and business agents who have started at a community college like Macomb or OCC. Macomb will set my standards straight and get me prepared to transfer to a university. At a community college you’re not only saving money but you’re saving time. – Katelyn Jaboro, 18, Sterling Heights Well, I had been looking at other universities my senior year of high school. I had favored Wayne State over the school I ended up choosing, which is Oakland University. Honestly though it came down to how much value they place on my IB diploma. I’m happy with the choice I made and the opportunity to stay at home for undergrad. It’s a beautiful campus and way more affordable, as well as having a wonderful environment with incredible students and faculty. – Rita Kachi, 21, Shelby Township 34 CHALDEAN NEWS AUGUST 2018
