University of Detroit Mercy Largest Catholic university Offering more than 100 academic degrees and programs through seven schools and colleges, the University of Detroit Mercy is Michigan’s “largest and most comprehensive” Catholic university. Rochester Hills Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Chaldean high school students shine in and out of the classroom BY STEPHEN JONES The summer is a time for most students to kick back, relax and reflect on a job well done, but there are a select few who should be especially proud of their major achievements both in and out of the classroom. Maria Alaa Mansour is a graduate of Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills. In the fall, she will be attending the University of Michigan as a pre-med student. Mansour was a National Honors Society member and officer, Spanish Honors Society Member, Phi Beta Kappa Honoree, Hometown Life Top 6 Student Honoree and WXYZ “Best and Brightest” Honoree. Some of Mansour’s achievements include: Bronze Recipient and Honorable Mention in the National Spanish Exam, earning the Modern Language Certificate of Achievement, Science Certificate of Achievement, Science Medal of Achievement, Acts of Christian Service Medal, Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club Youth Appreciation Award, President’s Award for Educational Excellence, twice earning the Mathematics Certificate of Achievement and earning the High Honors Achievement Award four times. She is a two-time member of the Archdiocese of Detroit All-Catholic Academic Team. Mansour performed at a high-level in the classroom while also managing a bevy of extra-curricular activities. She played the piano and was a member of both Marian’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams, all while holding down a job at Fox Run Senior Retirement Living. In her scarce free time, she volunteered in Henry Ford Hospital’s Emergency Room every weekend and St. Fabian Elementary School’s girls’ basketball team. “I have my sights set on going to a top medical school to become a dermatologist or pediatrician,” Mansour said. “In the future, I hope to have my own practice.” Another shining student from Marian is rising senior Nadine Abro. Abro is a varsity field hockey player, president of her class, and has been on the honor roll every semester. Following her senior year, Abro wants to pursue medicine. Mansour and Abro’s schoolmate at Marian was Madeline Kizy, graduation commencement speaker and President of the Class of 2018. Other accomplished Chaldean high school students include Alex John Kallabat, rising senior at Brother Rice High School. Kallabat is a member of the National Honors Society and an active volunteer, serving at Mother of God Chaldean Catholic Church as well as St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church. Kallabat earned excellency awards in English, History and Spanish. Christopher Hamama is a 2018 graduate of Walled Lake Central High School, and was a member of the Soccer, Cross Country and Track Mon-Thurs:8:30 – 9 Tues, Wed, Fri 8:30 – 6 Sat 10 – 3:00 & Field teams. While at Central, Hamama earned a 4.3 grade point average. Hamama was a member of the National Honor Society and was named Central’s Homecoming King. Christopher was also in the DACA club and won second place in the State competition. In the fall, Hamama will be attending classes at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Melanie Rofoo was a valedictorian at Stevenson High School. Daniella Toma finished second in her class and will be attending Oakland University in the fall. She was a member of the National Honor Society and received a Summa Cum Laude medal. It is an honor to share the stories of these remarkable young, Chaldean high school students that have excelled and clearly have bright futures ahead. AUGUST 2018 CHALDEAN NEWS 25
