fashion Fall Fashion: A girl’s best friend BY KONNIE BINNO Two of the greatest seasons for fashion are spring and fall. So even though we’re in the heart of summer, the pre-fall looks are making their way into boutiques and department stores. And New York and Los Angeles are each gearing up for Fashion Week in September. Although the thought of putting on jeans and a blazer or sweater seems strange compared to the current uniform of sundress and havaianas sandals, eventually we will all have to switch to cords and Uggs. Fall, one of the most beautiful seasons to experience in Michigan, can give a fashionista many options. Since the Fall Collection is so highly anticipated, much emphasis is put on color, detail and, more importantly, material. There is so much flexibility with fabrics for the fall runway and designers are using that to their advantage. A once-exclusive fabric, cashmere, has become as basic as cotton and is even being incorporated with other fabrics for items like hats and socks. (But keep in mind, along with rich fabrics come rich price tags.) It seems as if fall collections tend to be the most creative. This gives you more flexibility and creativity for yourself – it’s important to play with fall clothes by incorporating your own personality and personal style. The great thing about fall is that you can incorporate pieces from other seasons. For example, the mini jean skirt that was worn all summer long with jeweled flats can now be used as a key piece with a cashmere turtleneck and ballet flats or riding boots. Color is another important factor; now is the time to focus more on the deep rich shades such as purples, grays, chocolate browns and, of course, black. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color. If you find yourself always wearing black, slowly branch out by choosing shades like emerald green, navy and charcoal, which are easy to pair with black and other deep shades. A true fashion junkie can never forget about the accessories. From earrings to shoes, it’s important to choose right — and at the same time, don’t over-do. Don’t get caught up in having the matching shoes with the matching handbag and being head to toe — you’ll look like a walking advertisement. Keep it simple: Emphasize one accessory you’re in the mood for and incorporate that into the outfit. If it’s a bag, keep it simple and classic with the shoe. If the shoes are the highlight of the outfit, make sure everything else is simple and polished. Remember, a key to having great style and a polished look does not have to do with the trends for the FALL MUST-HAVES Anything cashmere Fitted boots or riding boots Anything lace — but only one piece of it Suede or leather gloves A great fitted blazer High-waisted pants Pinstripe button-down shirt A silk or satin patterned scarf (preferably Hermes) Trouser jean or pants A fitted leather jacket season or the “it” handbag. Use your own personal style to put a spin on the season’s trends and looks. It is important to make sure that the look that you have cultured works for you and your lifestyle — and not for your sister, best friend or cousin. AUGUST 2008 CHALDEAN NEWS 55
