ARTS & entertainment

ARTS & entertainment David Jason Boji is known to his fans as David B. disc jockey david b: branching out BY OMAR BINNO David Jason Boji, founder of D. Mix Entertainment, has always had a calling toward music. In 1999, he was so inspired by the Middle Eastern percussive instrument called the dumbug that he began looking into purchasing one. “I always had a passion for music,” Boji said. “I remember wanting to buy a dumbug, but my parents wouldn’t let me purchase one. I knew I had a real love for music, so I needed to find an outlet for that.” Instead of the instrument, Boji purchased his first set of DJ equipment and slowly began marketing himself to gain exposure and gigs. In a nod to his roots, he incorporates sounds with Middle Eastern music into his mix. “I slowly started building the number of parties I was performing at,” he said. “I saved all the money I made over the next four to five years and invested it toward my company.” In 2006, DJ David B began creating and promoting his own events at various nightclubs throughout Metro Detroit. “I started throwing parties during select holidays like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween and New Year’s Eve,” he said. “I was very particular about the venues that I hosted my events at, and only booked the best talent and entertainment in the area.” Boji said the biggest highlight in his career came in January, when StudentCity.com booked him for their Acapulco Spring Break event for the entire month of March. “I was ecstatic when they contacted me,” Boji said. During his stay in Mexico, he opened up for hip hop artist Flo Rida in front of more than 4,000 screaming fans. Boji’s visual effects are no less impressive than his music choices. Last year he teamed up with relative Jeff Sitto, an electrical engineer who specializes in lighting for the shows. “We have a unique combination of sound and lighting,” Sitto said. “The lights and sound equipment we’re using allow us to put on a Las Vegasstyle kind of show at venues that do not have their own equipment.” In September 2007, www.dmixent.com was formed. Boji and Sitto advertise their events on the site and plan to sell memorabilia, mix CDs and apparel to their fans. The site also features biographies of many of the top local DJs and percussionists in the area. “We post pictures from the events so people can relive the experience. We’re also planning on posting actual videos of the events on there in the near future,” Boji said. “We have a newsletter that our fans can subscribe to.” This summer has been good for Boji. In June he sold out a 300-person yacht on the Detroit River during the Red Bull Air Race. D. Mix Entertainment also threw a Pre-Fourth of July party at “Bayside” on Walled Lake, drawing more than 900 people. Boji is currently is a member of Channel 955’s Bomb Squad, a team of locally recognized DJs who mix and spin on 95.5 WKQI. 46 CHALDEAN NEWS AUGUST 2008
