Some things are just not worth the argument. I like to believe that I measure each situation and take on those issues absolutely necessary, the ones I have passion about, and the issues that force me to stand up for what is right and just. This April issue of The Chaldean News features various people in our community standing up and speaking out for issues in which they truly believe. Although their battles are quite different, they share a commonality — doing what they view as the right thing. In this month’ s cover story, Joyce Wiswell sat down with Judge Diane Dickow D’ Agostini to talk about a topic making headlines in Oakland County — overcrowded jails. Although her stance on the issue is not the popular one, Judge D’ Agostini is not backing down. Also fighting for what is right are members of the Associated Food Dealers (AFD), and on board with them are retailers and wholesalers who say the method of distributing food stamps is antiquated and that the system needs to change in order to benefit the customers, retailers and wholesalers. They are standing up for the customers who run out of money for food after the first 10 days of the month. They are standing up for wholesalers who can’ t provide the proper amount of stock for a store and they are standing up for the retailer who has a tough time keeping enough fresh produce, meat and dairy in stock all month long, and is also challenged with adequate staffing during the beginning of the month. In another article regarding the AFD, we cover their recent merger with the Great Lakes Petroleum Retailers and Allied Trades Association and talk to members of both boards on what that means for the industries and the new combined group. The associations exist now as one in order to stand up for the independent retailers and gas stations as they go up against corporate America and sometimes laws that only protect the big corporations. They exist because they want to give the independents a fair chance to succeed. Also believing that something VANESSA DENHA- GARMO EDITOR needs to change are those people behind the facelift of the Chaldean Federation of America (CFA). Writer Ken Marten did some research and discovered the latest happenings and restructuring of the CFA. Members of the Chaldean community took a stance against the direction of the CFA and urged those involved to refocus their energy and agenda to programs that best support the Chaldean community. Writer Jovan Kassab tells our readers about a Chaldean woman fighting germs in our environment and what she believes are unhealthy ways of ridding our homes and work spaces of germs. Josephine Elizabeth Fermanian has created an organic cleaner called Germs BeGone, and you can read more it in our Economics and Enterprise section. Sometimes it’s easier just to keep quiet … but it is those individuals who stand up for what they believe in and do the right thing who benefit us all. In life we are faced with all types of trials and tribulations — when you reach a certain age it is expected. It is how we react, deal with and cope with those situations that make us strong and make a difference in the world. Sometimes it’ s easier just to keep quiet and accept the decisions of the majority and status quo, even if it is wrong, but it is those individuals who stand up for what they believe in and do the right thing who benefit us all.
